Social Services

The SHA offers additional services to assist individuals and families. The SHA believes strongly in advocating for residents and helping them help themselves. Education, work experience, and activities for youth and adults are some of the opportunities available to SHA residents.

Below, you will see all of the social services we provide our residents.

Careers and Job Skills

Opportunities to improve job skills or in other ways advance in careers. Training and continuing education are available through community partnerships.

Parenting & Youth

Help with parenting is available through a number of initiatives targeted at families and youth. These include:

  • After School Program: One-on-one tutoring in any subject, at any grade level, in subject areas identified by parents, schools and the children themselves. Summer fun activities have also included movies, roller skating, mini-golf, and Valley Fair. The After School Program meets at the Peter Rich Community Center, 1201 N 8th Street, Monday through Thursday, 3:30-6:00 p.m. during the school year and Wednesdays during the summer months.
  • Recreation to Reduce Risk: The SHA offers scholarships to allow children to participate in organized sports. Scholarships may be used for registration fees or to purchase equipment.

Money Management

The SHA offers personalized help with managing individual or family finances. We offer private consultations for budget counseling, or we can make referrals to financial management companies.

Financial Independence

The Family Self-Sufficiency program helps eligible families gain financial independence. The program provides support and cooperation from community agencies. Participants may earn an escrow savings account while they progress through their goals.

PHDEP/Recreation to Reduce Risk

We have assisted youth in baseball and fast pitch, basketball, bowling, figure skating, gymnastics, karate, swimming, pony football and soccer.

Adult services

  • Office Skills Training: Partnering with Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College (WITC), we offered basic office skills certificate course designed to teach keyboarding, introduction to computers, Microsoft Word, word processing, office procedures and secretarial grammar and punctuation. We plan on offering other sessions in the future.
  • Senior Trips: We have provided trips to the casino, boat rides, and fall rides along the Lake Superior shoreline.
